pics

I just recently got a digital camera, a Fujifilm FinePix 3800. It's been lots of fun to play with. One of the best things about having a digital camera is the ability to easily share images with people. I will post pictures I think would be fun to share here. Here are the picture galleries I currently have online:

Chris Lortie's Wedding May 14, 2005 I got invited to Chris Lortie's wedding out here in BC, partly since his Toronto roommate for the last two years (who I incidentally knew from Carleton University) was staying with me while out here for the wedding. Since Shannon and I have been looking for a wedding photographer for our own wedding, and have been looking at different photographic styles, I decided to try my own hand at some wedding photography. Here are a few of the better shots.
San Diego Trip Apr 18-23, 2005 Several Information Services staff from Campus Crusade went down to San Diego for a DonorWare conference, and I got to be one of them. I have relatives (the DeGroots) that live in Escondido, which is only an hour or so drive from San Diego. So, I got to connect with them while I was down there, which was really neat!
We're Engaged!! Apr 10, 2005 On April 10th, Shannon and I got engaged!!! Here are a few pictures of the setting (a private room at the Bedford House Restaurant in Fort Langley), and of the ring. You can read more of the story here.
Bunzen Lake Hike Mar 13, 2005 Shannon and I went on a nice afternoon hike with her dad and Chris and Erin. We went to Bunzen Lake, just north of Port Moody (about an hour from my house in Langley). There is a nice trail around the whole lake, that takes about 2.5 hours to walk. There is some nice scenery, and it was a great sunny day for it!
Spring Downtown Mar 12, 2005 It is spring in Vancouver already. Here is what it looked like downtown. Notice that I am in shorts and a t-shirt, in MARCH, and was only slightly cool.
New Living Space Jan 15, 2005 When I got back from the Christmas holidays, I moved into a new place. I'm now in a 2 bedroom suite with a good Christian guy as my roommate.
Christmas with Relatives Dec 29, 2004 We always have a ton of fun visiting all our relatives, especially at Christmas time. It can be chaotic and crazy at time, but it's always a blast. And, there can be very meaningful times, too.
Edmonton Trip Nov 27, 2004 Shannon and I flew to Edmonton to visit her Uncle Bob and Aunt Kim for a weekend in November. They live up on the 16th floor of an apartment building overlooking downtown Edmonton, so I got some neat pictures off their balcony! Some of the many fun activities we did there were going on waterslides at the west edmonton mall, eating Greek food at an authentic restaurant, and going to a comedy show. It was a great time!
Lynn Peak Hike Nov 11, 2004 Shannon and I went for a hike up Lynn Peak in Lynn Headwaters regional park on Rememberance day. We went with some people from our home group: Jeff and Ashlee, a young married couple, and Erin, Shannon's sister-in-law (her brother couldn't go because of work). It was an awesome day for it - beautiful weather! - and we even had our minute of silence at the top.
Fall Summit 2004 Oct 1 - 3, 2004 From what I heard, Eastern Fall Summit rocked once again. Here are some pics Shannon took while she was there.
Calgary Retreat Aug 23 - 26, 2004 Campus Crusade had a retreat for all western Canadian campus staff in Calgary. Since I'll be doing campus ministry 1 day a week in the fall, I got to go along. Shannon also got to go, as she is interning with the campus internet ministry. The drive and a hike we did had BEAUTIFUL scenery!
Camping at Alouette Lake July 31 - Aug 2, 2004 I went camping with Shannon, her dad, her brother Chris, and his fiance Erin on the weekend. It's quite a nice area, with the lake being nestled between mountains!
Seattle Road Trip July 4, 2004 The young adult group from CLA in Maple Ridge did a road trip down to Seattle for Independance day, and Shannon and I went along. It was quite the experience. As Justin kept saying, "It's all about the journey".
West Coast Trail June 21-27, 2004 Me and 5 other people (Shannon, Amy Chow, Mike Woodard, and his two kids Erin and Mark) hiked the West Coast Trail in 7 days at the end of June. It's a spectacular and very challenging trail on the west coast of Vancouver island, BC. The pictures in this online gallery are digitized from prints from a cheaper point-and-shoot camera, so that is why they aren't quite as good quality. Also, I've scaled them down so they load faster, but if you want full size (1536x1038) versions, let me know.
Golden Ears Hike June 12, 2004 Shannon and I went for a little hike in Golden Ears Provincial Park. We hiked the West Canyon Trail up to Lower Falls. The West Canyon Trail approaches the falls from a side where there aren't many lookouts, so we found our own way through the bush to a few good lookout spots. It was great terrain to explore!
Tobogganing trip Feb 1, 2004
We were driving home and saw a cool tobogganning hill. Ryan, Kevin, Karen and I went to check it out, and brought along my snowboard and other various tobogganning equipment. The hill turned out to have some rad jumps, and we got a few good pics of us in action on the hill.

videos

I took a couple little videos with my digital camera of me trying different cool moves:

animations

Lately I have been once again inspired to try my hand at 3D computer animation. I have a few tools which are useful for this, such as Blender and POV-Ray, both available for free online. There are some great tutorials for these programs, too. Here are some animations I've made which I thought were kind of neat, and thought I'd share:
  • Animated blob swarm - since I'm a programmer, I often find that existing computer tools don't give me quite the power to do what I want. I had the inspiration to build a program that could control an animation. I built the program in Java, and had it write out a file for POV-Ray every frame using a template. It then called the POV-Ray engine to render the scene into an image. When all the images were done, I used bmp2avi to merge them together into an animation. (here is the same movie in a different AVI format, in case you can't view the other one)
  • Cart on Bumpy Ground - I just did the "A ride in the mines" blender tutorial on http://vrotvrot.com/xoom/tutorials.html. With the information I learned there on making objects follow a path, I was able to produce this short animation. It is very basic, but I thought the concept of having a car ride over bumpy ground was neat, and it would have been next to impossible to achieve an effect like this without knowing how to animate using paths.

  • peanutsandraisins.com is the website I built for me and Shannon's wedding. It's all about us, our wedding and honeymoon, and life beyond.
  • Shannon's blog. My wife loves expressing herself through writing, and so blogging has been lots of fun to get into for her.
  • www.kellonlincoln.com, the website for Chris and Lisa Lincoln (my brother-in-law and sister), and their new son Kellon!
  • the ryno flavoured studio. This is the multimedia studio of my brother Ryan. It's got music videos, freestyle walking videos, etc

  • My Ministry Website: Now that I've graduated from university, I've decided to join staff with Campus Crusade for Christ, to do computer programming at their national headquarters. This website is devoted to my work with Campus Crusade, and is meant to help keep my financial supporters up-to-date on what I'm doing and what God is doing through the ministry.
  • I have a THIRD personal website that I built a while back, at http://www.geocities.com/jb_eagle. It is a more thorough personal website, and has some cool programs of mine that you can check out, as well as 3D computer generated images I've produced over the years
  • Just for fun one time, I borrowed a little stuffed cow that Shannon has at her desk at the office, and took it on a field trip. I took pictures of it in a bunch of different places, and then posted them on a website. I then constructed an e-mail for Shannon from her cow, telling her all about the great adventures he had while she was gone. You can see the site the cow "made" at www.geocities.com/mr_cow1. Who knows when the cow will go on another field trip?

I've finally made my first ever parkour video! Download it here (6.5 Mb). Or, you can watch it on YouTube (although it's not as good quality) at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDOsWfthT1g.

After watching "The Incredibles", I've been inspired to play with 3D graphics and animation again. Since I can't afford to buy the big, expensive programs, and since I don't like to pirate software, I'm using what is available for free. When it comes to animation and modeling, Blender is by far the best I've ever found. Here are a few tutorials I've found as I've been working lately:
Blender tutorial Archive
Novice Blender Course (lots of links!)
BlenderChar
Blender 2.3 Guide (Vol II - Reference)
Using the tutorials, I've made a model of my head; see any resemblance?

I found this cool "program" called TomTree. It's a script that can be included in a POV-Ray scene file, and used to generate a very realistic looking tree. It has tons of parameters you can set, which you can use to generate all different kinds of trees. I've just started looking at it, and have no idea how it works! Be warned, though - it takes a LONG time to parse and render! Here are two example trees from the author's website:
